Countries where watching porn is illegal

Watching adult movies may get you in trouble in quite a few places around the globe. Pornography-related laws vary from country to country, but they are the most strict in the following states. Be sure to check this list before opening Pornhub while on vacation.

1. Sri Lanka

Here, the cornerstone of porn legislation is the Explicit Literature Ordinance. It is illegal to sell or keep any pornographic materials, and local production of content is prohibited. However, the legal implications of such crimes are quite moderate unless they concern children. The National Child Protection act states that if you are caught possessing, producing or distributing child pornography, you may spend up to 20 years behind bars, pay considerable fines and even have your property seized.

2. India

India has some of the strictest porn restrictions in the world. According to the  Information Technology Act passed in 2000, a person could serve as much as 3 years in prison and pay up to INR 500,000 in fines for the act of sending vulgar content via any media platform.

In 2018, the government’s telecom department ordered internet service providers to ban over eight hundred sites that hosted adult content. However, it is next to impossible to prevent Indians, who are avid consumers of porn, from indulging their fantasies. A few days after the ban, Pornhub established a mirror site, especially for its Indian users.

Overall, you may watch porn (except for child pornography) in the privacy of your hotel room, but if you do it in public, you have committed a crime punishable by law.

3. Saudi Arabia

Do not even think of viewing pornography while in Saudi Arabia. Any suggestive content, even drawings of scantily clad people, found on any device, will result in confiscation of such equipment. In fact, customs officials will scan your gadgets for any inappropriate pictures.

Since internet access, in general, is censored, it is next to impossible to even open a porn site from KSA. Attempts to fool the system, such as proxy servers, are not guaranteed to help you.

4. China

Here, sites may not contain adult content, and production is banned. Those who want to participate in porn are excluded from all film competitions, and movie studios lose their licenses. Possession will put you behind bars for as long as 3 years, and entail a fine of 20,000 yuan. Large-scale distributors may even be executed. Hence, the internet remains the only source of porn, but the government is shutting down such sites.

Other countries with strict anti-porn legislation include Uganda, Guyana, Bangladesh, Botswana, South Korea, Uganda, Nigeria, Sudan, Egypt, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. However, local five-star hotels like Hilton or Marriott are sometimes exempt from restrictions, as they need to cater to foreign tourists – i.e., satisfy their desire to hire porn movies.
