How long does shooting a porn movie take?

Porn videos range from short clips to full-length movies. In terms of production, adult cinematography has its peculiarities. Generally, production periods vary depending on a number of factors. These include time spent preparing the performers, shooting the scenes and still shots, taking breaks, making cuts, doing the cleaning and re-shots. On average, porn actors and actresses are typically present on site from about 9 am till 3 or 4 pm. After that, additional time is spent on editing.

Preparation: main steps

There are quite a few things to arrange before filming may start. Here is a brief overview.

  1. Trained staff are hired and the most suitable location is selected. Actors should also have their STD tests taken. Shooting may not commence until the results come back. In addition, there are certain legal documents to fill in.
  2. In the morning, the location is set up to make it look as authentic as possible. This may take from zero to a few hours.
  3. Performers get dressed and have their makeup done.
  4. Photographers take a number of still pictures, which could take another couple of hours. The purpose here is to collect material for screen caps and box covers. If penetration is involved, it is done only for the sake of still images, so the actors stay fairly still.
  5. If necessary, actors get dressed again, and the set is cleaned up in preparation for the actual scene.

The shooting of the scene

A sex scene that lasts 30 minutes in a movie may have taken around 45 to film. It all depends on the number of cuts between positions. However, it may be uncut. Sometimes, the process can last for a few hours.

During the shooting, actors may experience difficulty getting aroused. If this occurs, a so-called “hired hand” could stimulate the male performer manually. in case of insufficient lubrication, it is also applied by such a crew member.

As concerns “takes”, the intercourse normally goes uninterrupted with the cameramen moving around. This is because pauses and interferences may affect the male performers negatively.

Sometimes, after the shooting of the scene, performers take a break and proceed to film solo scenes for more material. After all, since a lot of money and time has already been spent getting the set and crew ready, it is only logical to make the most out of it.

After shooting

This is when editing starts. During the process, several things may happen. Scenes may be spliced together, sounds may be added, or faces may be blurred. It all depends on the material and the director.

To sum up, scenes that include nothing but intercourse with little dialogue may be shot at a rate of  2–3 per day. A full-length flick may take 10 days. The more complex the movie – the longer it takes. Longer dialogues, several locations or exteriors may also prolong the process.
